Triangle Choke

The triangle choke is a submission technique which works by blocking the carotid arteries and stopping blood flow to the brain. This is a technique which gets harder to accomplish the longer the fight goes on due to tiredness and sweatiness. It is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu technique so learning Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu will really help you to master it. Just like all submission techniques, this should only be applied in a controlled setting preferably with medical supervision.

How to do the triangle choke:
1. Get in a position where you have your opponent in open guard. (Open guard: A position where you are on your back and have either one foot or both on your opponents hips but not wrapped around their body)
2. Pull your opponent down towards you
3. Kick one foot around over the back of your opponent’s neck.
4. Close the triangle with your other leg
5. Add extra pressure to his neck by pulling down on the back of his/her’s head with both of your hands

In the triangle choke, you will have one arm and your opponents neck in between your legs. This technique is very common in mma when someone is in the full guard position because of the many opportunities there are to achieve the triangle choke from this position. One of these is when your opponent tries to strike you because you can pull their arm down and get them in the triangle choke. The name of the triangle choke comes from the shape your legs make when wrapped around your opponent.

Make sure to practice this technique quite a lot before incorporating it into a fight. The first few steps of getting into the choke are the hardest to master and the most important. For example, if you don’t get your leg around all the way you could find yourself worse than before with your opponent in control.
